On the night of 7-8 January 2019, the accused persons NANA Namoudou, BANDOKA GBABISSONI Bernadin, LIGUINEBANDI Crepin and ABOKE Jean Christ were arrested flagrante delicto in the locality of Libongo by the mobile intervention battalion of the military. They were arrested in the state’s forest specifically in the Forest Management Units 10008, 10009 and 10010 managed by Societe d’Exploitation Forestiere (SEFAC). They were caught in possession of five (05) hunting ammunitions of calibre 1075, a compass of mark SUINTO, a camera of mark PENTAX LENS (14 mega pixels), and a large hunting weapon no.391676 of Belgian manufacturing retrieved from NANA Namoudou through a search conducted later at his residence. During interrogation, NANA Namoudou and BANDOKA GBABISSONI Bernadin pleaded guilty while LIGUINEBANDI Crepin and ABOKE Jean Christ pleaded not guilty. During the hearing, the court accepted the guilty plea of the accused persons and invited those who pleaded not guilty to present their defence. They argued that they were not part of the group but passengers who paid 5000 XAF to NANA Namoudou to transport them to Libongo where they were going in search of jobs. But the court disregarded their arguments on the grounds that the camera seized from LIGUINEBANDI Crepin’s bag, was used by the poachers to take pictures of the position of animal trophies with the help of a compass. These pictures are often used to assure potential buyers of animal trophies, in order to obtain an advance from them prior to delivery operations. Moreover, all the accused persons were arrested in a protected area in possession of hunting tools. This indicated their intention to carry out hunting and comprised sufficient proof against their plea of not guilty. At the end of the hearing, the matter was adjourned for judgement.
